I have also noticed that I do not have an area where I can leave a synopsis, or restore past revisions of a post. How do I get these options to appear?

Search for a plugin called ”Featured Page Widget” (or something to that affect). This will allow you to have whatever pages you want on the side, featured page image, and text.
